About the Movie

Brad Pitt stars in this action packed film from legendary director Quentin Tarantino.  It’s set in World War II, and is a revenge fantasy centered around a squad of Nazi killing American soldiers.  As the war is raging throughout Europe, the elite squad of “basterds” is on a mission to take down Nazi leaders.

The movie is filled with “action, hair-trigger suspense and a machine-gun spray of killer dialogue” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), Inglourious Basterds is certainly “another Tarantino masterpiece” (Jake Hamilton, CBS-TV)!

How Did it Do at the Box Office?

In 2009 the film opened in a total of over 3,000 screens.  In North America the movie earned $14.3 million in the Friday of its opening weekend.  In the first full weekend it earned $38 million, the highest grossing movie of that weekend and the highest grossing weekend of any of Tarantino’s movies, up to that point.  Globally it shot to #1 in over 20 markets on 2,500+ theaters, grossing over 27 million in the first weekend. All told the box office revenues were an estimate $321.4 million for the movie, which held the spot as the highest grossing every by Tarantino (until Django Unchained in 2012).

What About the Critics?

The film saw success with the critics as well as the box office.  The film received 8 academy award nominations, and reportedly earning a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival the year it was released.  The popular film review site Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a solid score of 89%.
